The Society for the Arts in Religious and Theological Studies had its charter meeting at the 2002 AAR/SBL (American Academy of Religion/Society of Biblical Literature) conference. The Society was organized to provide a forum for scholars and artists interested in the intersections between theology, religion, and the arts, to share thoughts, challenge ideas, strategize approaches in the classroom, and to advance the discipline in theological and religious studies curricula. The goal of the Society is to attract consistent participation of a core group of artists and scholars of theology and religion in order to have dialogue about the theological and religious meaning of the arts, and the artistic/aesthetic dimension of theological and religious inquiry.

In addition to admission to the meetings of the Society, members will receive a subscription to the journal of the Society, ARTS: The Arts in Religious and Theological Studies, published by the theology and the arts program at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. Edited by Wilson Yates and Kimberly Vrudny, the journal publishes articles in the categories of theology and the arts in the study, studio, sanctuary, and classroom.

Members will also receive online access to our entire backlist, in addition to an online newsletter with information about the Society's meetings, and news from within the discipline.

You can become a member of the Society TODAY by clicking Subscribe Now, and using your VISA or Mastercard to join at the Society membership level.

ARTS: The Arts in Religious and Theological Studies is the journal of The Society for the Arts in Religious and Theological Studies published by the theology and arts program of United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities.

ARTS publishes articles in the categories of:

"IN THE SANCTUARY," which reflect on the use of the arts in worship settings—from designing the worship space to creating an art-filled liturgy;

"IN THE STUDIO," which explore the transformational experience of doing art whether or not the art is explicitly religious in subject matter;

"IN THE CLASSROOM," which discuss various approaches for teaching theology and the arts courses in colleges, seminaries and churches; and

"IN THE STUDY," which take more of an art historical or theoretical approach to the subject, treating topics as varied as medieval iconography and contemporary theological approaches to aesthetics.

Additionally, ARTS "IN REVIEW" reviews recent books about the intersection of theology and the arts, and "ON THE SHELF" surveys current titles.

A two-year subscription (4 issues) is $48.
